Interactions between hydrostatic pressure and oxygen concentration on the germination of lettuce seeds.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Lettuce seeds were germinated at different hydrostatic pressures and O(2) concentrations. Some combinations of pressure and O(2) concentration stimulated while others retarded germination. The highest germination rates which occurred with pressure application and added O(2) were equalled at atmospheric pressure if the O(2) concentration was increased sufficiently. Increasing pressure generally retarded germination, but the pressure effect was partly offset by added O(2). Sustained pressures affected subsequent germination after pressure was released, but only when O(2) was present. Seeds to which pressure was applied in the absence of O(2) germinated as well after pressure exposure as untreated seeds.

Seed storage at elevated partial pressure of oxygen, a fast method for analysing seed ageing under dry conditions
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Despite differences in physiology between dry and relative moist seeds, seed ageing tests most often use a temperature and seed moisture level that are higher than during dry storage used in commercial practice and gene banks. This study aimed to test whether seed ageing under dry conditions can be accelerated by storing under high-pressure oxygen. methods: Dry barley (Horde...
متن کاملInhibition of lettuce seed germination by cycloheximide and chloramphenicol is alleviated by kinetin and oxygen.
Kinetin alleviates cycloheximide inhibition and oxygen alleviates chloramphenicol inibition of germination of lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa L. cv Grand Rapids). The effect is not due to increased but rather a substitution for protein synthesis. A cytokinin and energy supply appear prime requirements for germination.
متن کاملGermination, respiration, and adenylate energy charge of seeds at various oxygen partial pressures.
The effect of O(2) partial pressure on the germination and the respiration of 12 cultivated species was studied. The reciprocal of the time necessary to observe rootlet emergence in 50% of the seeds was used to approach the germination rate. The maximum germination and respiration rates were reached in most seeds at O(2) pressures close to that of air. Decreasing the O(2) pressure produced a gr...
متن کاملSalicylhydroxamic acid potentiates germination of 'Waldmann's Green' lettuce seed.
A combination of salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) + cyanide (CN) is known to stimulate dark germination of Lactuca sativa L. seeds. Further studies were done to characterize SHAM and CN action in stimulating dark germination of lettuce seed. Germination was stimulated slightly by either SHAM or CN, whereas when SHAM and CN were combined germination was greatly enhanced. Treatment of seeds with ...
متن کاملInvolvement of reactive oxygen species in endosperm cap weakening and embryo elongation growth during lettuce seed germination
Endosperm cap (CAP) weakening and embryo elongation growth are prerequisites for the completion of lettuce seed germination. Although it has been proposed that the cell wall loosening underlying these processes results from an enzymatic mechanism, it is still unclear which enzymes are involved. Here it is shown that reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are non-enzymatic factors, may be involved...
